The photographer had just replaced the trash bag.  From the comments: I wonder if the cat was imitating. My friend’s cat would always imitate what people did. I remember one time, I threw a bouncy ball and it somehow landed in a boot and got lodged at the toe. So I put my hand in there trying to get it out, but the ball was stuck so I had some trouble. The cat comes over, looks at me, then sticks his paw in the other boot, while staring at me for approval. It was so adorable.
